Turn your time at home into an opportunity by starting a business

Coronavirus has disrupted the workflow of the entire planet. Almost every country has enforced a lockdown to contain the spread of this virus which has taken the world by storm. Without a doubt, times are getting tough, with people being locked in their homes, and businesses shut down completely. We hope all our readers are safe and sound in their homes.
But being at home can be an opportunity for those who don’t want the wheels of progress to halt. The markets may have shut down but there are still a variety of businesses and smart individuals who are still doing business despite being locked down in their homes.
In short, there are ways you can still start a business. What we're emphasizing is that you take this free time to pave a path towards a better outcome. We understand that things aren’t looking good and many people are losing hope; that's why it's necessary that you keep yourself occupied, and what better way to do that than starting a new business?
Here are some ideas for businesses you can start in the middle of a lockdown.

Become a freelancer

You were already thinking of it, you might have already tried it. People are now using their free time to stay productive and generate better income. Freelancers work in a variety of disciplines and professions. With the availability of platforms such as Freelancer, people can find work from all over the world. No matter the discipline or profession, there is a freelancer out there who is waiting for a client to place some work, and you can be one too. Some of the areas you could work in include:

Freelance content writers

There are many professional content writers who work part-time as freelancers. When they have a little time off and energy to work a few extra hours, they cater to a few orders if they can land any and earn a few extra bucks. Simple.

Freelance graphic designers

Got an artistic flair and skills in Photoshop or Illustrator? You could put those skills to use as a graphic designer. You may already work professionally as a graphic designer. Freelancing can be a great way to supplement that income.

Freelance digital marketing service providers

Digital Marketing encapsulates a lot of services such as SEO, SEM, PPC campaigns, web designing, and much more.
These are but a few services that are offered on a freelance basis as they can be provided on a remote basis. If you have a skill that you believe can be provided with the distance not being a factor, then freelancing is the business for you to get into. A majority of Businesses listed individually fit under the broad category of digital marketing so there is no need to have them mentioned separately.

Sell online

Ecommerce is the way of the future. Heard of eBay? How about Amazon? Shopify? Well these are all excellent platforms where you can become a seller. There are many who have made it a business where they sell products online using these platforms and earn a lot of profit as a middleman. The process is rather simple and easy, and once you've decided to become a seller you can sell a variety of products. In addition to eBay, Amazon and Shopify, there are other great platforms you can use, such as:
Ruby Lane (rated best-selling platform for homemade jewelry and items, vintage, and antiques)
Sell Anything
Facebook marketplace. You can use this to sell locally
Google Express
Selling online brings along with it a lot of benefits. Some of them include:
Fast launch times
Pre-established programs
Large customer base
Easy to expand your business and advertise online.
So starting your business as an online seller is relatively easy and simple that can be done even when we are under a lockdown. Just start by setting up an account and fulfilling the necessary steps and you are all set to go. You can find out more about how to launch your ecommerce business here.

Start a channel on YouTube

YouTube can be a good source of income, if you produce content of value. Some of the ideas you could try include:
Start a cooking channel
If you are academically qualified (engineer, doctor, etc.) you can upload academic tutorials
If you have a certain skill, you can give tutorials for it and upload videos of yourself working and creating new stuff
If you have writing or graphic designing skills, then you can upload content on YouTube that can appeal to a specific audience or an age group (e.g. Animated videos with songs for small children)
You can review different products or host events to debate on different topics and ask the viewers to give your input
YouTube has made people millionaires. It’s up to you how you can use this absolutely versatile platform to create a business for yourself. You can learn more about setting up your YouTube channel here.

Start teaching online

If you have a skill that's in demand and you can teach it to others, then you're already sitting on a pre-established business. Teaching online has picked up pace and is now seen as a proper business. A lot of people are looking for a teacher or a tutor who can teach them a specific skill or subject.
People offer online guitar lessons, piano lessons, cooking lessons and academic lessons. Plus, skills such as digital marketing, and other related disciplines are being taught to a large student-base thanks to the internet. Online classes are held where students enroll from across the globe and conduct classes online. It is a growing prospect that has already taken the form of a business which you can become a part of as well.

Home-based food services

This business may not have a broader outreach, especially in current circumstances; but we assure you, there are people who will come piling up to your doorstep when they hear you are providing home-cooked healthy meals.
Even though you may not be able to provide your meals to office workers throughout the whole city, you can provide healthy and freshly cooked meals to your neighbors, and that's a start. A good start in fact. There, you can develop a proper understanding of how to run a business and correct the minor errors that you see in the work process, make changes and improvements and within no time, when we have finally emerged after the Covid-19 pandemic, you'll have your business established and ready to go big.

This is another skill-based service that is in high demand. And we are pretty sure that if you have the necessary skills to do this job; you must also have the equipment and software needed for the job as well. The next step is to advertise your service and wait for someone to hire you.
We can tell you that there are businesses and even giant organizations on the lookout for capable and trustworthy bookkeepers. The best part of this is that you can do the job while remaining in the confines of your home. Also, no one is going to ask you how many clients you are catering to at the moment.

Final words

These are just a few ideas for some home-based businesses you can start during your time on lockdown. We'll continue to add more ideas to this piece, so make sure to check back regularly for more tips on launching your business.
