Contest Brief

This contest is to design a poster for a theatre production of the play 'Cyrano de Bergerac' by Edmond Rostand. The main character, Cyrano, is a flamboyant swordsman and poet living in 1640 France, and is famous for his large nose. If you google the name you will find lots of reference images.

We are looking for a simple but very clever poster design, including an image of Cyrano and his nose, but also incorporating the title of the play into the illustration in a clever way.

The design should be bold and stylish, with strong use of colour. We are specifically looking for a graphic or illustrated style, rather than photographic. It should look hand drawn, painted or printed – a bit messy, not clean and digital.

We have attached some posters we like – these should just be used as examples of images we like, and should not be copied in any way. Image 2 with the title in the character's ruff is our favourite.

We would prefer the title to look like hand painted brush script – a font like Lucky Turns for example.

Ideas:
- The title 'Cyrano de Bergerac' as the feathers in his hat
- The title 'Cyrano de Bergerac' as part of his cape or clothing
- The title 'Cyrano de Bergerac' making a face and / or his nose

Other elements / keywords that could be included:
- A full moon
- A fencing sword
- A quill feather pen
- Love heart / romance / rose
- Handwritten poetry on old paper
- Autumn leaves

You are welcome to submit a rough sketch / idea first, which we will then provide feedback on for a second version.

Important: The final design will mostly be used in A3 / A4 proportions, but please work on a square canvas. We will need the final completed image as a layered PSD at size 426mm x 426mm.

Thanks for the entries so far. A note on page size: please work on a square canvas, but make sure that the central image and title will work well when it's cropped to A3/A4 portrait proportions – this is how it will be used most of the time.
