Contest Brief

Need a colourful but ominous impressionist style digital painting of a tiny little guy in a tiny little sailboat (bonus for it to look a bit viking styled) being tossed around in a monstrous storm of giant waves, preferably with a jagged shoreline/cliffs. But there is a rainbow breaking through corner of the sky. It’s heavily featured artwork for a scene in a movie.

Note that a hand painted artwork that can be photographed or scanned will work. Either way it should look hand painted.

Size - portrait orientation, large - maybe 80cm tall, 50 cm wide. Or 90cm tall 60cm wide. Something like that.

Happy to answer any questions in comments.

The attached show some ideas, key points

1) little guy in little boat
2) very colourful
3) violent storm, boiling crashing sea, ominous clouds. Lightning maybe?
4) but crucially, the rainbow peeking through

This contest epitomises everything that is wrong with the contest section of this site. Charlatans, spam artists, naive contest holders and suckers. No one can blame a naive contest holder for not recognising a fake, plagiarised entry. No one can blame the suckers for trying to create art amongst all the chaff. The blame lies entirely on the entrants that either fake their way through the contest or upload spam entry upon spam entry in the hope that the contest gets abandoned and they get a cut of the prize money at the end. Contest holders are not entirely blameless. They often come along, offer a good prize, get several good entries and then vanish from sight - no doubt with artwork they are happy to deal with in low res. IP theft is taking place on a grand scale in this section of the site. Be it from cowboy designers lifting other people's work and calling it their own, or by contest holders stealing submissions and not paying out at the end.

: )... John. Entirely taking your points here, but the bottom line is - without direct evidence of copyright theft - Freelancer can't do anything, full stop. In this particular instance someone discreetly may have tipped the CH off - but we didn't get to know that at the time and all we did know was that not only had the CH been ripped off - every entrant who did a stroke of work had been ripped off also.

First thing you have to do in these circumstances is break it down to evidence otherwise, there's no chance of getting anything done. If I was snippy it was just the thought of all that good, time consuming work being tossed for that pile of... bits, up top. That's heart breaking.

We got lucky, here. Andy's actually a good guy, stepped up to the plate - did right by people. It worked out. But, throwing up ones arms and declaring complaint does no good - isn't going to achieve anything.

You have to have faith, when you raise an issue, it will get dealt with...

If you don't do that, of course nothing's going to happen. How can it?

Indeed, Freelancer don't moderate overtly so it falls to ourselves to ensure everyone, Contest Holders as well as Freelance workers, get a fair shake and that sometimes means sticking ones neck out. It's worth doing, doubly so if - indeed - your latter sentiments prove correct.

It's far better that coming from some old fart with less to loose than someone just starting out with everything left to play for.

      Would you not agree....?

End of the day, we're all in the same boat here. We have to try to do right, if in reality we get no further than just simply making the attempt. Doing nothing at all achieves just that. Exactly nothing.

Hi all thanks so much for the entries. To clarify, I stopped rating because the system pushed rated art work to the top of the list on my phone and new entries to the bottom, making it difficult to read. We considered them all. And where we did rate, it was suitability for the scenes - not an assessment on quality. I have bought 5 other pieces from the competition for other scenes and will be making offers on a couple more at least over the weekend. Jacqueline Howett guy, not you. ;)

Iana - as long as someone with ability and a work ethic actually got some paid work out of this - that's all anyone can (and does) ask and - if I may say - if the job cleaning this mess up went to you - that job couldn't be in better or more qualified hands. You made a beautiful entry and I'm glad he had the sense to make it up to you for that ridiculous rating.

Just, promise me - you'll at least try to charge him double, at some point... ; )

Thank you for taking the time out to fill us in on the rest of it, appreciated.

Good luck and if their AD doesn't have the brains to snap you up while they have the opportunity then, trust me - they really shouldn't be taking the term Art Director and applying it to themselves. You have skills. Proper ones.

Be well and stay that way, M : )

Mark, with the greatest respect somebody already pointed all this out discretely and we already hired somebody else for the same fee for a replacement that will be used in the film. This was all before you went all Friday evening Jacqueline Howett. Now have some self respect and move along. Cheers.

Andy - rest assured - the very next contest you run, I've not the slightest intention of doing anything else and - with not an ounce less respect than your response affords me - do you not think yourself electing to not disclose any of the above until just 16 minutes ago may have had its own part to play in tonight's proceedings?

Put your response here into context - the worst thing that's happened to you is someone here tried doing right by you by tipping you off and the only way you can think to respond is belittle them - meanwhile you've just paid someone who ripped you off $500 bucks.

Clearly, one of us has their priorities straight. Good luck with your next venture. And thanks for the screen-grab.

Congratulations, you're the proud owner of work declared the artists own but actually composed of elements stolen from the internet. Listed, in no particular order:

Waves (left side of composition) from this image (or version thereof) from here: here: https://wallhere.com/en/wallpaper/215386

    Boat - from here: https://kotaku.com/the-jarl-will-see-you-now-1657611871

The guy in the boat - is actually painted by Rembrandt Van Ryn, it's lifted from Christ in the Storm on The Sea of Galilee, an example of which you can find here: https://arthistoryproject.com/artists/rembrandt-van-rijn/christ-in-the-storm-on-the-sea-of-galilee/

On behalf of all the working artists here who actually bothered doing original work for you, many of whom you couldn't be bothered to even rate - thank you for considering our work so very, very highly that you chose this.

    Not cool.

You're right that the winning submission is a plagiarised cheat-fest that skirted around all of us and got selected. However, I don't think it is fair to blame the contest holder for not knowing that. Normally i would advise the contest holder to choose again and scrap this particular win, but there was a deadline that had to be met this morning. I imagine artwork was exchanged and money changed hands pretty quickly so there is nothing that can be done about it now. I have added Yelizaveta to my list of people to warn contest holders about but as you probably know, there are another 10 waiting around the corner to do the same. I feel your frustration though. I imagine a few here spent a lot more than 500 quid's worth of time on this and it cuts deep to see a cheat take the prize. Still, we live to paint another day.
