Due Dates: Post your essay online by 11:59 PM on Sunday, November 1, 2015. Then, evaluate FIVE peers's essay by 11:59 PM on Sunday, November 8, 2015.
Essay Directions:
1. Write an essay that explains what EXTERNAL (outside) barriers to leadership people routinely face.
2. Begin with your EXPLICIT THESIS STATEMENT (your overall opinion, summarized in one sentence), and a map (an explanation of which topics you'll discuss, in which order, to support the thesis).
Thesis:
Most people experience the same kinds of external barriers to leadership, no matter what race or gender they are.
Map:
These barriers are other people's perceptions of their worth and ability, depending on what stereotypes they harbor about people, and a refusal to believe in the concept of a growth mindset--that a person can grow in wisdom and intellect. Let's discuss these topics in the order in which they have been presented.
3. In your essay, quote at least once from both Barack Obama's memoir Dreams from My Father and one of Tupac ("2Pac") Shakur's songs to help you explain what typical external barriers young people today face. Additionally, quote from one of your peers, per the exercise we did in class last week, in which you and your peers interviewed each other regarding obstacles that stop them from being leaders in their family, community, church and other venues.
4. Develop two or more paragraphs to illustrate each topic in your map--don't try to squeeze all information into one paragraph.
One topic illustrated in a few paragraphs:
One external barrier to leadership is people who are determined never to let us forget our past mistakes—who deny us the right to what Carol S. Dweck describes as a "growth mindset" in her 2009 article "Brainology." [TOPIC SENTENCE] According to one student in my fall 2015 English course, “My family never allows me to forget my mistakes—especially abusing alcohol and smoking weed when I was younger.” This student told me that when she tried to advise her nephew against smoking weed, he threw her past in her face: “Don’t preach what you didn’t practice when you were my age!” he yelled at her (Lincke-Ivic). Family members like her nephew refuse to think it's possible that she has learned from past mistakes--that it's possible to grow in wisdom and intellect, as Dweck contends in "Brainology."
Like the student in my English class, [TRANSITION LINKING PARAGRAPH ABOVE WITH THIS PARAGRAPH] Tupac (“2Pac”) Shakur was not allowed to evolve, to display his growth mindset. Some people claim 2Pac was never a leader because of the gang violence he was involved in—and he sold drugs. In his song “Changes,” 2Pac clearly reveals that he is a changed person; if he could go back in time, he would be a better person, make wiser choices: “I'd love to go back to when we played as kids / but things changed, and that's the way it is” (stanza.line-line). The 2Pac who wrote “Changes” was a changed man, discouraging others from selling drugs:
Try to show another way, but they stayin' in the dope game.
Now tell me what's a mother to do?
Bein' real don't appeal to the brother in you.
You gotta operate the easy way.
"I made a G today" But you made it in a sleazy way.
Sellin' crack to the kids. "I gotta get paid,"
Well hey, well that's the way it is. (3.37-43)
Although his refrain is “[w]ell hey, that’s the way it is,” he’s telling people: that’s the way it should NOT be.
5. Conclude your essay effectively with a persuasive purpose (see the definition of a persuasive purpose in the model essay "How to Write an Essay" in Announcements.
6. Use correct MLA format. Review all of NuNu's notes to you in returned Reader Response assignments and in Announcements for help with MLA format. Additionally, google Purdue's MLA OWL--in-text citations--to help you quote correctly.
REMEMBER: Your paper's topic is NOT Obama and 2Pac; it's external barriers to leadership, and you're using Obama and 2Pac as examples to explain typical barriers people encounter that stop them from being what Maslow describes as self-actualized: achieving their full potential.
Peer Evaluation Directions:
Tell each of the five peers you evaluate about the quality of the essay's
1. Thesis
2. Map
3. Transitions
4. How topics are illustrated
5. In-Text Citations (quotes)/MLA format
6. Conclusion
Example:
DANNY LUDWIG
1. Thesis: Your thesis reads well and seems focused, a specific overall opinion about the topic of external barriers to leadership.
2. Map: Your map was confusing to me; I wasn't sure what topics you would discuss to support the thesis. The map just seemed like the thesis, as if you were just re-writing the thesis, but using different words.
3. Transitions: You have a lot of big paragraph in a row; I think you needed shorter, one-sentence transition paragraphs between the big paragraphs to give your readers a break--not to clobber them by making them read so many long paragraphs in a row.
4. How topics are illustrated: You did a good job on breaking the topics into a few paragraphs.
5. In-Text Citations (quotes)/MLA format: The quotes were very good, and illustrated the topics you were detailing to support the thesis. However, you didn't quote the stanza (paragraph) and line numbers in the parenthetical citations: (stanza.line-line).
6. Conclusion: You just re-stated the thesis; there wasn't a persuasive purpose.
