Battery operated LED light design

Hi, I have developed wearable for cows and we come across the similar problem. The best solution we found was surprisingly was that a uP consumes less power than a pure analogue solution. Also, The LEDs should not be on all the time. For human applications, a fast pulsating LED can look like a full light LED while the %of the time is actually OFF. This is achieved by PWM modulation. The on time is configurable by software. You specified the luminosity requirement in lumens (luminous flux). This would be influenced by the parabolic reflective surface common on flashlights. We can talk about the LEDs choice regarding luminous intensity (candelas). For this design I would use: - attiny uP (<0.4 USD). In shudown mode, the consumption is lower than the battery self discharge. - resistors (<0.01 usd) - capacitors (<0.01) - switch (0.08 usd) Depends heavily on the Mechanical design. - transistor (<0.01 usd) - LED <0.6 USD (depends on the required power and light angle). Hi, Thankyou for a well thought out specification. I have had many years experience as an electronics and product designer, specialising in control systems and embedded micro systems. I do not see any special issues with the logic behind your outline however I have a few questions. Can you confirm that the 'remote' system is comprised of two items, one housing the batteries and the LED and the other the switch? How far apart are they going to be? How are they to be connected? Do you have any enclosures in mind for either end? Regarding the objectives. PCB pricing should be easily kept under your budget, it will depend on the size of the finished PCB board(s) as that is the key cost factor. Battery life time is going to be exclusively a function of the current consumed in delivering the 20-40 lumens you specified and how often the system is used. The brightness is really a function of the power source driving it and how long you want it to run. The LR03 cells (alkaline) are about 1.1Ahr, a bit more for the lithium versions.
