We need a circuit that can detect when a residential home emergency backup generator is running. These are 220 Volts AC and typically a Generac or Kohler 10-20 KW powered by natural gas or propane. We need a simple circuit that can identify either a pure sine wave from the utility a stepped sine wave from the generator and activate a simple relay for dry contact control.

Greetings, Interesting problem for sure. It may not be as straight forward as it looks. * 1st of all they are mains line voltages so have to be scaled down and isolated before the electronics can process it. * 2nd, the sine wave inverters mostly have wave smoothing filters which filter out the steps so that it's as close to a real sine as possible - which means the difference may be minute. * Even if the difference was there, it wont be easy to differentiate in time domain. I would think that the voltage have to be scaled down and filtered to identify the steps in frequency domain. And if it's noisy (which it might be) - digitization (ADC) and processing through a DSP might be required. * Having said all this - I might be over estimating - once we get to observe the real waveforms from the mains and inverter - we might be able to get some difference which is easier to identify. Overall, it requires some work in terms of evaluating the two waveforms before the design can be thought of. So I have just put an initial estimate and would update as appropriate. T & R Alok Pugalia

The following procedure will be adopted to complete the project. This circuit will include a controller board with a step down transformer, a custom board that will power the system and a circuit to convert input ac supply wave to half ac wave. With ADC the matrix will save the values and they will be compared to a matrix of an ideal sine wave. the results will be displayed on the LCD and an output signal would be generated to active a relay. There is also another solution. Using a sensor to detect and differentiate the existence or not existence of Ripples of the current. Based on the signals which will be sent form the sensor to a MCU. The MCU will send a signal to the display screen to show “Generator on” or “Generator off/Main power supply ON” and will also send another signal to switch on the relay. Kindly consider my proposal.
