Create an application icon starting from a gif logo I already have

I have a gif image which is an application logo and I want to transform it into an icon to attach to my application. The icon should be in different sizes, because Windows Vista and Windows 7 are able to show the different sizes. I don't want the icons to scale badly, that is I prefer the logo to be converted into vector format (Adobe Illustrator preferred) before converting it into an icon set. I want the vector format as a deliverable as well. edit: The full Vista/7 icon set includes: 16x16 24x24 32x32 64x64 48x48 256x256 **Simply scaling down from the 256x256 size does not work. **All sizes need relevant level of detail; the smaller the icon the more you need to exaggerate the defining details.
