When i think of the mathematical opperation x squared my first thought goes to a cubicular design(technically this would be x^3 but that would make for a very flat logo!)I propose a 3D X^2 composed of cubes of contrasting colours similar to your image, perhaps in a cube itself with the camera at an orthographic view from one of the corners. I take it from your description that you want the logo to be colourful but look good in b&w aswell? I think this would work as long as the colours are chosen correctly. These are of course my initial thoughts aplease dont hesitate to contact me if you need more info.
