Introduction Our primary interest is improving the searchability of the 721 pdf documents saved on our site. On a different site that archives the same documents, [login to view URL]~ota, users can only search pdf versions of the reports alphabetically by title, alphabetically by predetermined keyword, and by year of publication. We want to expand this capability so that users can search using these tools, but also can search the text of the reports, report number, etc. ## Deliverables For the search engine- D) Each report (saved in .PDF form) is indexed in a mysql database with the following information: year of release, title of report, 1-3 index numbers (NTIS, OTA, and GPO), table of contents, and a summary. E) Our search engine will be able to search the database using any one of several different search fields- 1) keyword/title/phrase (full-text search on Summary, Table of Contents and Title) 2) year of release 3) index number 4) topic (create a dropdown menu using the subject categories defined by the Princeton OTA group. They are as follows: addiction, aging, agricultural technology, AIDS/HIV infection, air pollution, alcoholism and alcohol abuse, alternative fuels, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, arms control, automobiles and automobile industry, aviation, banks and banking, biological diversity, biological research and technology, biological weapons, biomaterials, biotechnology, business and industry, cancer, chemical weapons, children’s health, climate change, communications, competitiveness, computer security, computer technology, crime and criminal justice, defense technology, developing countries, disabilities, drugs, economic development, economy, education, electric power, employment and training, energy efficiency, energy technology, environmental health, environmental protection, genetic research, hazardous waste, health and health technology, information technology, insect and pest management technology, international relations and technology transfer, labor, law and law enforcement, manufacturing, materials, Medicaid and Medicare, medical malpractice, mental health, metals industry, natural disasters, nuclear energy, nuclear war and nuclear weapons, oceans and oceanography, oil gas and mineral resources, oil spills, osteoporosis, OTA annual reports, patents, pharmaceuticals, pollution, remote sensing, research and development, science and technology, solar power, space, substance abuse and addiction, superconductors, superfund, telecommunications, terrorism, training, transportation, waste management, women’s health, workplace safety and health) Look and feel of interface - The search engine interface will be on the left column sidebar of our site http://otaarchive.org. We are using Wordpress to run our site, using the theme K2, release candidate 4. The search engine will be integrated into our Wordpress theme. The search interface will need to integrate into the left sidebar, as well as having dedicated pages for a search form and search results. The core WordPress files should not be touched, and the interface added using a custom plugin. The Search Results should show the name of the report, year of publication, index number, topic, contextual match, the relevance score (if provided), and a link to download the PDF. The search results will appear in the center column. F) Search Interface: The left sidebar should contain a single text field that will be used for a full-text search of the Summary, TOC and Title fields. Matching results will be displayed on Search Results page in the center column. Below the text field will be a link for ‘Advanced Search’ which will display, when clicked, a new form directly below the ‘advanced search’ link. The new form will have a number of text fields that will allow the user to populate any combination of the searchable fields (Section E) and perform a search. Matching results will again be displayed on a Search Results page in the center column. Examples: For the left sidebar navigation of the advanced search, here are two examples that are pretty close to what we’re looking for… [login to view URL] Look at the ‘About’, ‘S&T newsletter’, and ‘S&T bill trackers’ links on the left sidebar. Of course, we want people to be able to search, not just have a list with more links [login to view URL] - Check the ‘fellows directory’ link on the left sidebar. Again, we want additional search fields to appear, not just a list with more links. ## Platform any
