The task at hand is to modify an existing hardware driver which is written in Pascal to alter the method of controling and interacting with the hardware device. The hardware vendor has implemented a new API call which will allow a much better method of interacting with the hardware. The desired functionality has been proven to work in a test program. The device is a Canon CR-180 check scanner/sorter, and the API is well documented. The desired functionality change is as follows:
Currently, the driver interacts with applications software in this manner:- An item is scanned and its information is transmitted to the PC- The driver examines the data and sends a message to the hardware telling it which pocket to file the item in (based on a simple criteria).- This works, but it is very slow since it requires a conversation across the wire for each item scanned. The feeder and transport are shut down and re-initialized between each item, making it run very slowly.
New driver functionality allows for the following:- At initialization time, the driver transmits sorting criteria (the same simple criteria) to the hardware via new API call.- No interaction between the PC and the sorter is required at runtime, allowing the sorter to run at full speed, which is 180 documents per minute.
