A State of Fiction in the US Report

We are looking for a versatile, intelligent researcher and writer to produce a brief report titled "The State of Fiction in the U.S." The report will be primarily for internal, non-commercial purposes and does not need to be "finished" as we have our own editors and writers. Our main need is for the right researcher to produce statistical information in the following areas in an intelligent, coherent manner: Readers: * Approximately how many American adults (21 and older) read fiction? * Approximately how many American adults read nonfiction books? * Of the fiction readers, how many read literary fiction? How many are reading escape fiction (science fiction, fantasy, vampires)? How many reading potboiler fiction? * How do these numbers compare to 30-50 years ago? * What do Americans want from reading fiction? Writers: * How many literary novels were published in either 2012, 2011, or 2010? * How many other kinds of novels were publisher in the same year? * According to literary authors themselves, what is "the state of fiction" - its quality - in the United States? We acknowledge that many questions will be difficult or impossible to answer definitively. We want a researcher to gather educated, informed answers to as many of these questions as possible. Sources must be cited.
