Hello, I have worked on a similar project before: a captive portal for a restaurant that only allowed it's clients access to the internet after visiting an internal page where they authenticated (and optionally viewed an ad). It was base around a custom DNS server (developed by me from the ground up) that correctly resolved domain names for registered clients but returning the same ip address (the internal registration site) for every domain for unregistered users. The identification was by MAC address. This way the access could be limited in time and worked across every application. Getting back to your problem, a proxy server may not be the best solution since it can be simply removed from the application so it can access the internet directly. However if you are decided on a proxy server it is actually a simpler system. I could build a completely custom proxy server that redirected requests based on the client authentication status with sessions being saved in a local database (space and volume requirements are small).
