I have a website that collects some information from a user, performs some calculations, and produces a form with lots of lines and wording and boxes. Refer to my two uploaded files. There are two 2-page reports. Depending on the inputs, one of the 2-page reports is to be produced. Your project is to build these 2 reports (4 pages) with all of the lines and boxes and shading and wording, using HTML5 and CSS. All dimensions, positioning, lines and boxes are to be specified in inches. Each of the boxes will contain a value specified by a variable like <%=(M_1GrTax)%> (you and I might need to discuss the syntax). The value should appear in 10-point courier, right-aligned. You may use the same variable name in each box. After the project is completed, I will edit the source code, replacing each with the proper variable names. The tops of the pages should have 2 buttons. "Print" will print the 2 pages. "Save" will save the 2 pages to a disk file. (If it's not possible to print 2 pages with one button, then it will be ok to have a Print button on each page.) I want the coding to be very clean, easy for me to understand and to edit. Presently, my site produces the reports as .pdf files, passing parameters into the file. However, this no longer works with Chrome and Firefox (it works ok in Internet Explorer). So, I am eliminating .pdf and replacing it with HTML5. Plus, the HTML5 and CSS will be easier for me to edit every year as the forms are updated. You can see how my site works by going to [login to view URL] ID: abc1 Password: xxx Fill in some numbers, then click the Print button. You'll see what it is that I want to replace. BUT FIRST... Will this work? Using HTML5, will the form print to appear as the original that I've provided? Will paging work. Maybe I'm asking for the wrong thing. My programming skills are 10 years old. I might need advice from you. Thank you for your considerations. Art Lieberman

Hello Mr Art Lieberman, I have read your description and in my opinion the best option would be to use PHP, HTML and CSS to duplicate what is currently being shown in the PDF. With HTML you can specify a screen value as well as a print value. In other words what you see on the screen will slightly differ from what is printed by the print button. The main reason is due to the print option taking measurements in inches and the screen option taking measurement in pixels. Since you need inches, a separate CSS file for printing is recommended. As for the PHP part, I would use PHP because HTML is best for static content. Since the values change dynamically, PHP or Javascript together with HTML is the best solution. I believe we can use the current setup and only modify it so that an HTML page is generated instead of a PDF. I see that the current script uses GET variables to populate the form. If we use my method, those GET variables can be used in this new script. Thank you, Danny

I have recently created a very similar solution for a public office reporting commision in which I used css and html 5 to control bathtub print and screen views. As a side note, it is also possible to use server side libraries to produce an exact pdf replica from the html and css page. If course, the viability of this approach for your application depends on your server environment. Whatever it is, I thoroughly enjoy creating solutions with information technology and look forward to working with you!
