Should English become the official World Language?
The acquisition of the English language is a thriving industry. Out of a world population of six billion people, conservative estimates suggest that over 1.5 billion are able to communicate in English – a 50 percent increase over the past ten years. In addition, of the 195 countries in existence in 2015, sixty seven gave English ‘official status’ as a primary language. A further 27 included it as an ‘official’ second language.
Take the example of India. A Tamil speaker from the south of the sub-continent uses a completely different language and alphabet to a Punjabi speaker from the north. The chances are though, that they can communicate in English - an official language of the country and widely taught as the second language of choice.
Of course as first language speakers go, English (5.5% worldwide) lags well behind Chinese (14.1%) and in fact comes in third, being also beaten by Spanish (5.9%).
The rise of China as a business super power may suggest to some that its language might become a rival, at least in business circles. In reality however this is not the case. In that vast populous country more people are studying English than in .....
