Write some Articles philosophically

PHIL1050-05, Fall 2016, Weekly Journal You’re required to submit a weekly journal. When you write your journal, you should have two goals in mind. The first goal is the comprehension of the readings, so you might want to note the passages that you find difficult, provocative, persuasive, unpersuasive, seemingly platitudinous, or illuminating. The other goal is the preparation for other assignments (such as the letter and the paper), so the primary audience for the journal is not me but yourself, and you can think of writing journals as accumulating materials for your own future use. For this goal you might want to note ideas that are most relevant to your real concerns in life, either intellectual or practical. It might be a bit hard to relate philosophy to life at the very beginning, but I hope the relation will become much more obvious the more you read/think/write/discuss philosophy. Ideally you’ll write your thoughts down when you do your reading for the class or after each class. Each time you might write from a few lines to a few paragraphs to a page or two. When you submit them in one document by the end of the week, they should amount to between two to four full pages. The process of writing the journal should be as stress-free as possible. In fact, you might even think of the process as an exercise in meditation or therapeutic writing. When it works well, it should really be quite enjoyable, as your mind is both focused and calm. My hope is that once you get accustomed to it, you’ll find it even a bit addictive (for lack of a better word.) In this sense the exercise is similar to running—if you’ve kept running a few miles every week for a month or two, your body would beg you to keep up the routine once it is interrupted. Please date each time you write your journal (which means your submitted journal may have one or more dates on it.)
