The Requirement: We are a small software company and have a new software product which is nearing completion. We need to begin the process of writing user documentation for it. We are looking to work with an experience technical writer located in the UK/US/CA/AU/NZ or similar high standard english first-language country (as the reading audience is primarily in these countries). The Work: We will need you to first develop a documentation / user guide standard / stye + the guide itself. We would develop the documentation with you in 2 stages: 1. A user quick-start guide: 5 - 10 pages due by end of February. If step goes well, then we move onto the next step: 2. A full length user document with details on every feature and how to it works, how to configure / use, due by end of March. The Software: The software is a security tool used to search through data. The target audience is corporate and business users. It contains roughly 100 user functions in the GUI. There is also a command line version which has no GUI. You will be given both sets of software so you can work with it and understand it better as part of the documentation process. The Future: We want to find someone we can work with long term. We have 2 other products that are in desperate need of better documentation so upon conclusion of this immediate task, we would look to engage you to help us re-develop the other documentation. We're looking for a real professional in this field so we've set the budget in a broad range. We're also cognisant of the potential volume of work hours required so we hope you will take this into consideration when placing a bid. I would use your provided example to draft an outline of the structure of the document and get agreement on that. I would then structure the document to enable you to embed it in a context sensitive manner if you should decide to go that way in the future, but still retain the usability and readability. I would generate the document from two user viewpoints, I would explain what is visible on the screen when you enter a page, and I would explain how to perform set tasks (which may involve visiting several screens). I would take all the required screen captures but style them in a way that they can be removed quickly for a more compact document.
