I think this is a very exciting prospect, I would be interested to learn more about the patent. I think the key is to make the licensing process appealing to the company, before picking up the phone. Two routes I would be happy to explore are working on the current leads that you might have from the previous marketing employee, and secondly researching a completely new leads.
The road-map to success:
-Getting to know the product, and the market it operates in
-Learning about the competitive advantage the licensing can have to the company
-Researching prospects
-Finding leads
-Getting the foot in the door (appointments!)
