Produce a workflow/steps to produce multilayer stencils form photos.
Project is to: Make a multilayer stencil from an image/photograph using PhotoShop
Visualize a photo of a parrot. Trace over the each color with a mouse/drawing pen. Place tracing of each color on a separate layer. Save each layer separately.
Now trace each layer to produce vector files and save each in a DXF file format. These DXF files are cutout on plastic sheets using a laser cutter.
Currently, I have been “experimenting” with the following procedure:
In Photoshop open a photo (such as a dog) and desaturate the image. Then manually trace over the image with mouse or drawing pen to select all the shades of black, then all the shades of grey, all the shades of lite grey, and all the shades of white. Note: each tracing should be placed on a separate layer. So there would be four layers (one for each shade). Inverse each tracing and save on its layer. Then open each layer/photo in CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator and image trace each layer to form vector files. Save these files in a DXF file format. These vector files are sent to a laser cutter and cutout on plastic sheets. Then each sheet will be used to airbrush a picture of the dog.
Note there are various ways to trace and select areas of an image. By manually tracing each shade you can make decisions on where to place the “islands” and “bridges” which are necessary in cutting stencils so that major areas do not fall out of the final cut stencil. Example: the eyes need to have some continuous plastic material to connect them to the overall plastic sheet. Otherwise the eyes will separate from the stencil.
On You Tube there is an example of one way to accomplish this project and it may better illustrate what I am describing. The You Tube video is NO. 136 Airbrush by WOW. This example is in the first half of the video.
I use Creative Cloud.
I currently using a Mouse to trace but I can use a Wacom drawing tablet.
