**WIFI GPS Transmitter**
We have a need for a GPS device that transmits its signal over 802.11b (WIFI).
In researching a method to produce a device, I have compiled a list of components that we would like to use ??" taking the GPS serial data and transmitting that over WIFI using a serial to WIFI adapter. Both units come with developer kits.
GPS with serial output (in NMEA format) and antenna: Laipac development kit ([_[login to view URL]][1])
Development kit costs $189.00
Serial to WiFi: Grid Connect WIPORT development kit ([_[login to view URL]][2])
Development kit costs $299.00
Both of these products were selected because of cost (OEM solutions start at $70 for the GPS and $100 for the WIFI). We want to have the option of manufacturing the device after it is developed and tested; even though we don’t know if there is a viable market for it. The module should be powered by a standard size battery (like 4 or 6 AAs).
OPTION 2: We would like to be able to read both the IP address of the unit and the GPS stream through an integrated LCD module; however, if this is too costly at this point we can skip it.
OPTION 3: We would like to have some type of rotary switch on the unit to give additional feedback to the unit ??" such as a dial from 1-8. If the user is hurt he can dial 8 and the unit will transmit both the GPS stream and his status (8). Again, if this is too costly at this point we can skip it.
