Add a widget area to my wordpress theme at the bottom

I am using a theme for my new wordpress site which currently utilises a 'footer' widget area and a 'bottom' widget area. Both of which are capable of holding up to 4 widgets; footer 1, footer 2 or bottom 1, bottom 2 etc. I require an additional widget area added to be displayed just above the 'bottom' one. This should be called 'promotion'. It needs to be able to hold 4 widgets. These should be called 'promotion 1/2/3/4'. My theme currently utlises a child version and so any amendments to theme files must be made at child level.
