i have a great idea what is over clocking the system and it isnt cycled. i have done a project for a client last year with same issue...i tracked the source of the issue and coded a script to handle it. all works well now. i still have the code and i will need to track the root of the issue in your site and apply the code to it and get it resolved

The problem might be within the too many requests ( too much traffic caused by DDOS attack or search engines crawling ). Also the issue may be related to the magento cache setup. I am going to investigate all the possibilities and remediate the problem.
