This report is based on studies conducted in Meru Central District in 1998. The studies were carried out to determine the problems facing farmers in cotton production and the role played by the Government policies in promoting and enhancing cotton growing in Meru Central District. The district used to produce high cotton yields in 1970’s, which led to the construction of the ginnery in the area in 1975. The production has, however, declined over the years, largely due to government policies on alternate crops. The study objective was to highlight the quality and quantity of cotton lint produced in the district; and to identify and find appropriate solutions to technical problems faced by the farmers; how to raise yields, hectarage, and income. It is hoped that the report will be of value to the government agencies, industry, multilateral and bilateral organizations in helping them assess the merits of cotton related development projects; and in designing cotton development programs.
