The approach adopted was to write an Excel addin in C#.Net making use of the Excel-DNA framework, and the PDFSharp library for pdf operations. The pdf merge functionality was made available to Excel as a user defined function =MergePdfFiles(file_list) and via a COM interface. The PDFSharp library was built from the latest source code, and a C#.Net library was written to contain the merge fucntionility which calls the PDFSharp library. Both libraries were packaged into an Excel-DNA xll file which included a ribbon button to trigger an About popup with the library version details.

An online search revealed a concept project which was coded to extract a specific xll file. After triangulating this code with the source code of both the Pack utility and the Excel-DNA runtime, I was able to develop a generic UnPack command line utility (in C#.Net) to extract dll library files, the dna source file, and any included image files (for icons etc). A final step was to automatically adjust the contents of the unpacked .dna file to recreate the source needed to repack the xll add-in file.
