Contest Brief

I need somebody to answer this. The person with the BEST answer will be awarded the full prize amount.

Hormonal birth control was a huge breakthrough for women's sexual liberation in the 1960's. Today in Canada 20% of reproductively aged women are using oral contraceptives containing some combination of estrogens and progesterone - that number does not include women who use non-oral hormonal birth control. Clearly, hormonal birth controls are hugely pervasive in our society, which has had many benefits for women and men as well.

However, there is accumulating evidence that there may be negative effects of hormonal birth control, including reduced sexual desire (see link to article, below). In addition to this there is evidence that use of hormonal birth control is linked to depression which has been trending on social media in the past few weeks (see second link, below). Finally, some have suggested that use of oral contraceptives contributes to the elevated levels of estrogens found in drinking water, which have been linked to precocious puberty and fertility issues.

For your opinion piece, please use knowledge from the course so far to explain from a neuroendocrinology standpoint why it makes logical sense that oral contraceptives could affect sexual desire. Based on this, and other potentially negative effects of oral birth control, do you think that the benefits of these contraceptives outweigh the dangers? Should more emphasis be put on alternate methods of birth control to reduce oral contraceptive use?

Hi, I just wanted to clarify the tone of the article. Do you want it more of a research type, formal tone or rather a casual story telling type
