Contest Brief

I'm looking for a designer to create original art for the cover of my non-fiction book.

The book is a memoir about lessons I’ve learned from my son who has Down syndrome. The book is about my transformation - how I’ve been changed (improved) by this unique journey and is both poignant and lighthearted - honoring him as my greatest teacher.

Title: UNEXPECTED LESSONS FROM PROFESSOR HIGGINS. (The words “FROM Professor Higgins” will be written in his childish (5-6 year old) handwriting - which I will provide.)

I already have ideas for the back cover - his picture, 2 stick figure drawings of his, a Blue/yellow Down syndrome ribbon, an award seal (2 chapters in the book have already won awards - I’ll give you the words later) and the description.

On the front cover I would like:
NO Picture of my son
-Off-white, Pearl white or light grey background
-Chose colors that are gradient shades of blue and yellow OR compliment with Blue and yellow. Im open to different colors. Teal? Or your suggestions…
- title (see above)
- something artistic and beautiful in the center of the cover that reflect self-transformation. If a silhouette of a head - no gender - that is artistic. (NOT posed to look like ecstasy, romance novel style. Don’t over extend the neck.) I am open to your thoughts about this key component or what’s inside the head…reflects change and thoughts…abstract, elegant, exotic, scenery, space - open to your ideas.) I’m looking for eye-catching beauty and/or poignant.
- something inside the head reflecting a journey/overcoming/growth/changes - and moving through chaos to finding peace.
- also in the head is a circle of light - the sun or source of all knowledge that radiates.

Even though that’s very detailed… I welcome your ideas.

My goal is also to offer the selected artist a contract for 12-20 additional black&white drawings - to be used inside the book with terms to be mutually negotiated. And, of course you will be credited for the art/illustrations in the published book.

I’m open for further collaboration.


The winner needs to be willing to work with my agent for formatting the art for Kindle paperback publishing. JPEG, less than 50 MB, 2,500 pixels in height x 1,600 pixels in width.

      yes, you can take it as a refrence if you want to but that does not make you an illustrator, you are a programmer, who can just generate 100s of options with a click of a button.

    Hello CH, how are you? Are you interested in an original proposal? I mean, the contest has been filled with entries made with Artificial Intelligence... Would you pay for something like that? Don't be fooled. Seeing that the entries with AI have good scores, this makes more people who have no talent and only know how to use AI enter the contest. This distorts it and causes it to lose quality and interest in freelancers who can deliver something interesting and original.


    I also see that there are too many entries, the vast majority do not contribute anything, they are only made with artificial intelligence or with filters on the photos of your son. I suggest you reject the entries you don't like and make the contest look "cleaner".

      Hey Pablo, this blatant use of AI is so so disappointing and artist and Illustrators like us can't compete , I see contests full of AI entries with 600/700 options, its really appalling.
