We need more submissions for Ep. 2/5/6/7/8! For some reason there are dozens of entries for Ep. 1 and 4, but very few on the later episodes. You have better chances of winning an award by submitting to one of the episodes that needs more entries! Don't start on Ep. 1 and 4 like everyone else. Start of 6/7/8 where there's little competition!

NOTICE TO ALL CONTESTANTS: Please disregard the comments in the brief about choosing a common "TEMPLATE" and asking everyone to copy that template.

After reviewing the many excellent submissions, the styles are so varied that it would not make sense to ask everyone to change their designs to copy another designer's style template. In hindsight, that wasn't a practical idea; my bad there.

My new intention is to just choose 8 winning bids (1 for each episode) from the contest submissions, and accept that the styles will be a little different from one episode to the next. All submissions should include the logo or the words "ENERGY TRANSITION CRISIS" somewhere in the design, but there will be no requirement to follow a specific template.

I'm getting the impression that some designers may need more time. We have MANY submissions for Ep. 1 and 2, but very few for Ep. 5 and later. DESIGNERS: If you need more time, and want the contest extended, please reply to the comment in the comments area posing this question and I'll consider extending the context if that's what you guys want.

The total prize value of this contest is US $800, to be awarded as (8) separate $100 awards, 1 for each episode's thumbnail.

You should make separate submissions for the art for each episode (there are 8 episodes in the series) that you wish to submit for. A separate $100 award will be made at the end of the contest for each single-episode thumbnail graphic that is chosen.

I've written up a full project brief, including some sample graphics you may want to use in some of your submissions. The project brief is in a separate attached MS Word document (because there's no way to put graphics in this section). Please be sure to read the attached project brief before submitting. It's very detailed and gives direction on what each episode is about.

I will monitor the contest and update star ratings and give feedback where appropriate at least once a day during the contest period.

      Ep. 4:
      In many ways, 447 was our early favorite because the two images very clearly tell the story of where the heat energy comes from (center of earth), and then shows how it’s extracted. So 447 is still our top pic for choice of GRAPHICS. But the text and overall graphic composition just didn’t grab us. For these reasons, we’re going with #709 as our top pick for now. 466 has a great feel the the LEFT side (text layout), but the geothermal cross section FLOATING IN SPACE just doesn’t work. That designer should try again with something other than suspension in mid air. 253 is engaging but we like the content that tells the story better. I53 also got honerable mention because of the geothermal graphic.

    ALL CONTESTANTS - PLEASE READ: I've said this before but I need to say it again - we keep getting more and more new entries for Ep. 1 and 4. WE ALREADY HAVE LOTS OF FINALISTS FOR THOSE TWO EPISODES.

    Right now (17-December, 11pm U.S. ET) there are only TWO finalists for Ep. 3 and 8, and only 3 finalists for Ep. 5 and 7!

    You can keep submitting for Ep 1 and 4 if you like LOTS OF COMPETITION for some reason. But the better opportunity for you is to submit for Ep. 3,5,7, 8 where this is ALMOST NO COMPETITION.

    PLEASE FOCUS ON UP. 3/5/7/8!

    I DON'T GENERALLY CONSIDER "SEALED" BIDS. My policy is to give feedback on submissions in order to benefit ALL contestants. That's the whole idea behind a contest - to allow all the designers to see which design approaches are working and which are not, so everyone knows what direction to go in.

    I do understand and respect that designers don't want their best ideas "stolen" by other designers, and when I see that someone obviously just copied someone else's design, I rule out the guy who just copied someone else's idea. But overall, the reason I take the time to give feedback on each design is to benefit everyone, and when I see a sealed bid, I generally don't comment on it or give it a star rating.

    I won't completely rule out considering a sealed bid if it really stands out as the absolute best entry. But in general, when you submit a sealed bid you're going to cause me to disfavor your submissions at least to some extent. Please consider submitting unsealed bids instead.

    You are not looking at the design, you are just judging by pictures. If you want to see a picture, you can find a good picture on the internet and write a simple text on it. You need to look at the color scheme, typography and the way of design that is presented. Please wait for my next entry. I will show my best.

      Sir, I assure you, the reason your submission was rejected is that your DESIGN sucks really badly. There's nothing wrong with the picture. It's YOUR design that was rejected because you're not as good of a designer as the people who are doing well in this contest. Simple as that.

      NO, I'm not going to wait for your next entry. Please don't bother submitting it; there's no point wasting your time doing so. And thanks for the lesson on pictures and the Internet. I learned a lot.

    I wasn't able to read your feedback on my submission that was rejected after a feedback in it. Now I ask you rate the worst ones a '1 star' so that we can still read the feedback and make changes.

    Also, we need more time for every thumbnail for all the episodes. Atleast 48 hours extended.

    CONTEST UPDATE 2023-12-16:

    For some reason we have a HUGE number of submissions in the ACTIVE category for Episodes #1 (43 entries), and Episode #4 (20 entries). But we barely have any submissions for #2 (7), #3 (12), #5 (7), #6 (ONLY 6 ENTRIES!), and just 3 entries for #7 and 4 entries for #8!

    So while we're close to being able to choose winners for #1 and #4, we need more quality submissions for the other episodes.

      We are going to use the following star ranking system:

      5-Stars: Reserved for the tentative WINNER for each episode. We haven't chosen any yet.

      4-Stars: FINALIST under serious consideration to win the $100 award for that episode.
      IMPORTANT: quite a few of the BEST ENTRIES are still ranked only 3 stars because the artist
      submitted SEALED bids. Those artists have been notified in comments that their entry will be
      upgraded to 4 stars (finalist) as soon as they resubmit UNSEALED.

      3-Stars: Still in the running, but something about the design isn't quite finalist material. We have tried
      to give feedback wherever possible on what to upgrade to be considered as finalist.

      1/2 Star: Not being considered for winner at this time, and we tried to give comments where possible
      explaining why the design didn't work for us.

      We will give the people who submitted sealed bids some time to resubmit unsealed before finalizing the list of finalists and choosing winners for the episodes that have plenty of entries. We will probably extend the overall contest to allow more time for everyone to submit bids for the episodes which only have a few active entries presently (Ep. 2/5/6/7/8 need more entries).

      We will give another update on where the contest stands within 24 hrs of this post.
