GRAFIC 1 five core values of SCRUM
[ GRAFIK ]
This chapter detailed the five core values of SCRUM, which are commitment, courage, focus, openness, and respect.
Team members need to be committed to the work that they are doing, as well as to each other. However, teams should never commit to tasks unless they know they can complete them. Janet’s team are encouraged to commit to their roles and to the overall project.
Courage is important, because team members should be able to voice their opinions and stand up for themselves. On the other hand, they should also be careful not to be arrogant, and continuously push back on team decisions. In the case of Janet’s team, Paul and Karen need to especially work on this aspect.
Furthermore, teams should be focused for the duration of each sprint. Each task should be inspected and reviewed properly. Still, teams should also know how to prioritize work so that each task gets the amount of focus that it needs without wasting time and resources.
It is crucial for team members to be open minded and to listen to one another. Ideas should be shared, and mistakes should be transparent to be fixed quickly. However, teams should know where to set boundaries so that meetings and discussions do not drag on for hours when work could be completed.
Lastly, teams should respect each other, their products, their stakeholders, and the structure of the SCRUM framework. Everyone should feel valued for their contributions, but should not feel like they need to chase an overwhelming amount of work in order to be recognised.

GRAFIC 2 Ground rules for using SCRUM
[ GRAFIC 2 ]
This chapter has shown that it is firstly important for the team to set up some ground rules to follow throughout each Sprint.
Secondly, the team has to receive detailed training in order to become more comfortable with the processes of a new framework.
It is then also crucial to define the frameworks for each task and each meeting that the team will take on. You need to be able to estimate timeframes as accurately as possible at the beginning of the first few Sprints.
Following this, the team needs to do a reboot of their perspective on project processes, and it is important that they can visualise the flow of the new process before taking it on.
Communication structures are also crucial to establish when beginning with SCRUM, in order for the team to transition as smoothly as possible. Lastly, the first thing to be solved is the team’s biggest problem, whatever that may be.

GRAFIC 3 A successful SCRUM Team
[ GRAFIC 3 ]
It is important for all team members to be accountable, to agree on ground rules, to be collaborative and decisive. Especially important for the Development Team is a sense of motivation and creativity.
The Scrum Master and Product Owner might lead different sections of the project, but it is important that they are both confident, competent, and strong people who are persuasive and empathetic to their team.
