<Technology Description>
This technology relates to the control of hybrid vehicles (i.e., vehicles driven by both an engine and an electric motor).
　Hybrid vehicles are controlled to switch the power source between the engine and the motor in order to minimize fuel consumption. To do so, information from the car navigation system is often used. When the car navigation system sets the route to the destination, a plan is made as to which power source should be used at which section on the route based on the road gradient information recorded in the car navigation system. Specifically, on an uphill, the engine and motor are used together because the motor alone does not provide enough power. On the other hand, on a downhill, the engine is not used, and the motor is used as a regenerative brake to charge the battery. In this way, switching the power source at points where the road gradient changes improve fuel efficiency.
　However, due to errors in the car navigation information, the road gradient based on the car navigation may differ from the actual road gradient. In such cases, the power source is switched at a point where the road gradient does not actually change, which may hinder fuel efficiency improvement. The driver may feel uncomfortable for this.
　To solve these problems, this technology detects the actual road gradient with a car-mounted sensor and performs control by considering both the information from the car navigation system and the actual road gradient. Basically, the power source is switched based on the road gradient information in the car navigation system. However, the power source is not switched in locations where the car navigation system indicates that the road gradient changes but the actual road gradient does not.
