Contest Brief

Mock-up Website Wanted!

"SELFIES" by Gabriel Gilbert is a hard-hitting novel about love, lust, betrayal, and redemption in our digital age. Mock-up a website that sells the book and engages visitors to sign up to receive free chapters, listen to podcasts, share opinions, and receive news about the author's national book tour.

The winning design will be used to build the site. In addition to the guaranteed $250 prize, the winner's name or company will be cited on the website and promoted via its blog and social channels. The winner also will be given rights, of course, to use their design for their portfolio.

1. SITEMAP: A sitemap has been created as a guide. You can go wild, off the map, if you wish--creativity is welcome. Just keep in mind: the winning design will be the one most likely to engage visitors landing on the page AND capturing their emails or other sign-in (e.g. social webs?), so they are added to a newsletter.

2. IMAGES: Use the attached images in your design. You may add additional images or graphics, if you wish. Just know that the attached images are central to the novel's "brand." So, the winning design will make best use of them, along with the title's font, and overall general mood.

When people shop online or in bookstores, we want them to remember these images, the fonts and the novel's title.

Look up @selfiesnovel on Facebook and Twitter. The Facebook site recently posted excerpts from the novel's 2nd chapter.

Any forms of distribution, file sharing, sale/trade, or other form of distribution or re-use are prohibited. DO NOT RE-USE OR SELL THESE IMAGES OR PHOTOS AS CLIP ART OR STOCK PHOTOS. Hello Everyone,

So many great entries. Very appreciative to all who participated.

    The leading finalists were:

    - GreetDesign for unique use of images, color, intelligent overall flow.
    - Aleksei G. for an original approached, both elegant and attention grabbing
    - Janina Myles D. for such a tasteful, unique but approachable interface

The winner is Ivan S. for his ensuring the book pops out, incorporating ocean and water behind a book largely set in Florida, and an extremely engaging, elegant layout using images of books alongside careful choices of type. This is sure to have visitors -- who are book lovers -- spending time by associating the drama of the book's setting with their passion for reading.

Again, thanks to all, great job, and congratulations to Ivan!

Hi, some have asked, is this just for design or coding too? So, I do have WP skills and have done ecommerce. That said, my clock is ticking and the book is already printed and being entered for ordering nationally. So, a winner will be picked as scheduled, and I may approach the winner, and then the runners up in order of rating, if they wish to bid:

    - WordPress on my BlueHost account
    - Set up with my PayPal or set up new Stripe account gateway
    - Suggest and possibly set up additional autoresponder to ingest emails. I've used some, but most require hand-exporting into MailChimp or whatever to get the emails going and I just find it messy.
    - Test and launch before end of September.

So that is not a call for bids. But letting you know it could happen.

Hello, we are nearly at the end of the contest. The book releases 9/11/17. When submitting work that has photos key to your design, please keep track of how/where you got them. If you win, we will need to buy or get clearances on stock images, unless they are public domain. Lots of good stuff, you're making it hard to decide...THANKS!

Hello, keep 'em coming. Some really neat ideas here. When someone is first-in with a cool treatment, like the gentleman photoshopping to make cover look like a book in dimensions, they get extra credit. Don't clutter your mockup with navs that aren't in the map. Do make the image of the book the primary one, not the author. We're here to sell the book! Also, the closer the mock-up comes to PNG-grade deliverable, the more likely it will win if it is really strong creatively.

In fairness, I'm going to rank closer to deadline. Seeing some creative stuff, and others that are basic templates. Don't care if it is a template. But know the goals: 1. Cover of the book is front and center. There's a clear call to action to BUY THE BOOK. 2. Navs are named per sitemap, not cluttered. Major points if social web icons are shown in one or more positions. 3. Look/feel echoes novel's allure, danger, passion, something wrong, guy's hands are dirty

If you're asking it be sealed, we opted not to only because of the extra fees to hide entries. I'd encourage you to just be original or wait til closer to deadline if you're concerned about copy-cats. I will notice that for sure.
