AJAX ASP (classic or .net) content rotator

This project will require updating a pre-existing ASP Classic webpage or creating a new .NET webpage? to use AJAX to rotate content.? The object here is to make a request against the database before refreshing the content.? If a connection can not be made then one of two things will happen. Either display the previous content (do not refresh) or display a generic error.
## Deliverables
We have a current system for rotating content.? The content can be text, html, a URL, an HTML page, swf (flash), avi or images (jpg, gif, png).? Currently when the page is displayed a timer is set using a javascript timer.? When the timer ends the page is refreshed and new content is displayed.?
Some content is displayed in an Iframe (for example a URL to [login to view URL] will display the page in an iframe).
The problem we are having and will be trying to resolve is that when the internet connection is disrupted (internet loss, server or DB goes down) there will be a "page cannot be displayed" which causes the content to not be displayed and the IE default pcbd error page.
What we are looking for is an AJAX solution that will do the following steps:
1) page is loaded
2) Once the page is loaded the AJAX code takes over
3) A connection to the database is made
? ? ? ? a) If the connection succeeds then the page continues to load the content.?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? I) Timer is set from a record in the database.? Once the timer runs out the AJAX code repects step 3).
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? II)All fields in the DB are queried.? content as well as page settings are loaded and displayed.
? ? ? ? b)If connection fails then either the previous content is displayed, or an error is displayed.? The choice between these two settings should be a value stored in the code (1=error, 2=previous ad).
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? I) The page will set a default timer to try connecting to the DB again after 1 minute.? If no connnection can be made again the timer loops back to 0 and continues until a connection is made
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? II) Once a connection is made the page loops back to 3) and tries to load content again.
As I have said all ready we have a pre-developed page all ready working with displaying content and DB connections, and all this update needs to handle is if the connection cannot be made to the db, and the steps to take if a connection is or isnt made.
Also the AJAX code should work in a way that will allow us to set the background color, time to display content and work with IFrames.
