You are required to write a report in two parts addressing aspects of economic planning and development in the local area. The report style is not prescribed but should contain numbered sections including an introduction and conclusion. The report should be appropriately referenced using the Harvard referencing style. Additional material should be placed in the Annex.
You are required to identify the key aspects of current English economic development policy. In particular the relationship between the planning system and economic development; and the key mechanisms of economic development being used. You are required to identify how this policy is being implemented within a city region of your choice.
Assignment Tasks:
PART 1: (1,500 words; 40% of marks).
Current National Economic Development Policy
• This element of the assignment should review the main tenets of current government policy towards economic development. It should in particular comment upon the relationship between planning and economic development and the role of the planning system in economic competitiveness. This part should briefly comment upon the conceptual justifications for such a policy approach and any possible critical responses

PART 2: (2,250 words; 60% of marks)
Critical Review of Economic Development policy in a chosen city region
• The second element of the assignment involves you reviewing the current local economic plan(s) for the area you choose- namely the LEP though depending upon the city region other organisations may be involved as well. You should profile the area and identify the strategic approaches and mechanisms deployed by the economic development organisation(s) involved. You should comment on their effectiveness to date.
