I am researching foundation competences, the skills, abilities and characteristics that are fundamentally hard-wired, that can't be significantly altered by training, coaching or experience (e.g. personality traits, intelligence, etc.). In this respect, they differ from the many surface competencies (e.g. formal presentation skills, spreadsheet skills, technical knowledge base, etc.) which are more the product of learning and experience. The first competency under study is that of intellectual/cognitive ability. My working definition of it is as follows: The Intellectual Competency is more than just the ability to perform well on a standardized test, although it does include the aptitudes that predict success in an academic environment. It encompasses mental agility, quickness and creativity, the ability to learn and common sense. This factor is a combination of a person’s unique mix of skills and abilities and how well she or he uses them. The hypothesis (backed up by considerable data) is that people who make smart decisions and who use their talents effectively are more successful over time than those who make bad decisions and/or squander their intellectual resources. I need several references that show clear relationships between this broad competency and performance in a business or other organizational setting. Of special interest would be studies focusing on leadership but there should also be broader studies. Also, it there are persuasive studies showing where this competency is NOT related to job success, I'd like to know about that. Although I'm defining this as a built-in competency, I'm interested in any research and suggestions about how to make better decisions and work smarter. If there are good references related to coaching for improved performance here, I'd like to see them.

## Deliverables

I want at least 20 good English-language articles (translations are OK) on this subject. In summary, the article should show: * This competency's importance to success on the job (or its irrelevance) * The evidence for whether it is really "hard-wired" or whether (and how) it can be developed in an adult. The studies should be drawn primarily from the psychological literature (e.g. journals associated with the Society of Industrial/Organizational Psychology of the American Psychological Association) and the business journals (e.g., Sloan Review, HBR and Academy of Management). However, don't exclude data from other good sources. I require both the abstract and the full article. It may be in electronic or hard copy format.
