BACKYARD GREEN HOUSES
Here is a fun question to consider: are plants and flowers something to enjoy just because they look pretty or because they taste great? A gardener knows there are a lot of answers, but one of the best is that gardens make spring and summer great seasons of the year. A lot of flowers and vegetables only grow during certain times of the year because of climate. Some, such as orchids, won’t grow at all in the dead of a cold winter. There is a way around Mother Nature. Greenhouses allow a gardener the opportunity to grow inside when the weather outside will not allow it. Horticulture enthusiasts might hesitate to build a greenhouse because they think the project is too expensive. They need not worry. There are greenhouse kits on the market that are highly affordable.
These may be cheap in price but definitely not in quality. Green house kits come with sturdy supplies meant to withstand inclement weather. They can be portable, so the owner can take the greenhouse along when the house is sold. The design plan of these units is deliberately small to accommodate the typical space constraints of a house’s backyard. It’s the quality of the material and not the size that really matters. The green house kit frames can come in fiberglass, aluminum, and coated steel; all of these are meant to withstand the blast of the average winter storm. The sidings are ordinarily a clear vinyl that is strong enough to handle the wind, but transparent to allow the sunshine to come through to the plants. Polycarbonate is also used and there is always the option of using glass, although that would make the kit a tad more expensive.
Cost is a key consideration and will fluctuate with the material being used. Getting a warranty is not a bad idea at all and some kits have warranties for up to fifteen years. Structures built to last years will require maintenance and the ease of replacing torn or broken parts should be part of the decision on which kit to buy. The interior of the backyard greenhouse can’t be ignored. The gardener has to decide whether or not shelves or hanging rods are important or if a base needs to be established. A final point to ponder is really the most important one: how easy is the greenhouse to build? Not many amateur gardeners are journeymen carpenters. Ease of construction may be the deciding factor for a person who is all green thumbs.
Gardening is a fun hobby and green house kits have what is needed to allow that pastime to be followed even in the dead of winter. Exotic plants and their wonderful fragrances can be enjoyed no matter what the weather, and a greenhouse can protect tomatoes from sudden frosts. Old Man Winter doesn’t have to put a gardening hobby into hibernation. Small green houses can be constructed from kits, allowing the avid gardener the chance to enjoy his or her favorite pastime no matter what the weather is outside
