I need someone to use occurence data (GPS points from an online database) to get distribution of 25-40 marine species. The GPS points of thousands of occurences are available from an online database ([login to view URL]) and can be exported in a few different formats. Using the mapping software of your choice, connect these points to create a convex polygon shape for each species. Calculate the area in km2. Subtract area that is occupied by land. Have a look at the GBIF website. There are some tutorials on there about how to use it. I will need details of your methods so I could replicate your results if need be. Thank-you.

Hello Jennifer, I'm a grad student at the University of Colorado studying Geographic Information Systems. I can complete your project quite quickly using ArcGIS. I'll create a vector point layer for each species or however you want it broken down, and then use the points to create a polygon. Using a layer of continent polygons, I can then clip any part of the polygon that insects land. Depending on the size of the data file, I can use SQL Server to perform queries to separate the data into more manageable sizes for the polygon creation, but from the few samples I downloaded, it shouldn't be necessary. Hi Jennifer! I'm both a GIS pro and a graphic designer. You need only the data (areas) or maps as well? About the method, I will be using ArcGIS, you'll need the software in order to replicate my results. I can try to use Open Source programs (qgis/grass) but can't promise at this point they can do it.
