I have a B.S. in Actuarial Science and an M.S. in Economic Theory. I'm well versed in this kind of analysis and understand the advantages/pitfalls of econometric and statistical models. After reading your project description I think you should consider non-linear correlations, which would require non-linear regression. I do run data set of all sorts using SPSS. I do correlation and regression analysis in most of my work. I can interpret outputs of correlation and regression analysis and know if the coefficients are significant or not. I try to explain why variables behave as they are. Gave realistic quote since I need to discuss more of research to develop meaningful statistics. My degree is BSEE where I had math electives in Advanced Calculus, Probability/Statistics, Fourier Analysis, Digital Signal Processing, Matlab, MathCad, Maple, Mathematica are the PC tools for which I am experience.
