display summary of sharepoint list

I have a list in a sharepoint site of objects The list is comprised of two columns (Object & Status). There are 2000 different objects and there are three statuses (not started, obsolete, referenced) I need a web part to summarize this data in the following format:- Not started 1000 Referenced 650 Obsolete 350 (This is where in the list of objects, 1000 objects have the status set to Not Started 650 objects have the status set to Referenced etc.) As the objects have their status changed, the summary list is updated. The output can be in a format which I can update myself into the sharepoint site (due to security issues). This can be cutting and pasting relevant CAML but instructions would be required.
