If you want to go with the wordpress approach, woo is probably the most comprehensive e-commerce/shop management plugin on the market. But the one thing you need to be prepared for is that, even though the basic plugin is free; the add-ons necessary to get things functioning the way you want can become very, very costly. Just check out the woocommerce add-ons and you'll see what i mean. They average about $100/each. The plus side? They're only 1 time payments for the addons (vs a subscription fee) and in most instances, you have complete control over the shop without a 3rd party vendor taking a cut of your sales. You'll also have to make sure that you purchase a woo compatible theme as well and hosting is your responsibility. So if you want on-site checkout? You're gonna need an ssl certificate on your server & make sure that it's PCI compliant. If you go the shopify route, you can still build out the site in wordpress (as there's integration plguins available). But you can just use the shopify platform to manage everything, and pay the monthly fee. But in this case, you don't have to worry about any of the hassles that come with self hosting your site. A couple other things - cost to build a BASIC woo/wordpress site is probably gonna be around $1500. Shopify, a bit cheaper (around $1k). I have been designing websites for over a decade and have completed a number of online stores in the recent past. I'm also very good with content management systems and very good at securing them.
