Javascript / CSS sprite display with animations and movement functions

I would like to make a simple css fighting simulator that has 2 players and functions to control their movemens based on a certain set of sprite images. NO GAME DEVELOPMENT NECESSARY, just *displaying* the characters on the screen and providing javascript functions to control the players on the screen will suffice. Examples: left_player_punch(), right_player_high_kick(), left_die_die(), right_player_walk_left(20px); etc Here is an existing tutorial somone wrote on how to do exactly this, but I am not proficient in JS so I cannot do it and do not know how to work with sprites.
