To avoid known attacks on the server. You can change SSH/MySQL port to other port but make sure the port should not be conflict with other one. Another option is whitelist your IP address (if you have public static IP) in firewall and block to rest of the networks. Instead of using IPtables. I would recommend to use APF or CSF.
