Hi! We have a very old software project. The former developers are no longer available, and the code is not very pretty or clean. Also the database sucks. BUT the system is running for a long time already, and it gives less problems. So we decided to do a step by step modernization. The system runs on an old virtualized Windows Server 2003 with the built in IIS, and was written in Classic ASP (VBScript). The data is stored in an old MySQL 4.0 server installation on the same server. The connection strings can be changed very easily. The target for the first step is to bring the MySQL to the newest version, and change the dataformat to UTF-8. This means, that the old data must be converted, and the future data should be stored in the UTF-8 format automatically. The server can bea reached over TeamViewer and VPN. I can also copy the whole system and let it run under a special domain (on the sames server), oder I can bring up a copy of the whole server as an additional virtual machine. We have no MySQL specialists in our company, and the trials with the information we got over a google search didn't work... the MySQL update produced only errors... To whom it may concern, updating the db shouldn't be the problem. But I have following questions: 1.) Is it possible to dump the db so it can be exported? I have my own MySQL server which I can use to update the db design. Though a copy of the virtual system will also work. 2.) Do you want to stay on MySQL or change to MariaDB? 3.) How is the VBscript connecting to MySQL? I presume over ODBC. Then you would have to update the driver as well. I am at your disposal for further questions. Regards, Daniel

Hi, You said you having software so should I mean you having web application, created inside classic asp, correct? What database you having right now msaccess? What estimation will give having consider only related to MySql changes, Correct? As I am not aware of system as well complexity so you just can consider its rough estimation not full and final.

Hi, I am an old expert in this area since 1998, and I used to develop a lot in ASP/SQL, ASP/Access and ASP/MySQL Combo. I can understand the problem you might be facing. However the update of DB alone will not resolve the problem, the necessary 32-Bit drivers are also required. It's definitely a good Idea to replicate the server to make another safe side and not to messup drivers in existing system for safety. I can be your long term support partner and can help you out if in future you want to upgrade the system to more sophisticated platforms like .NET or PHP. I just now handled and finished more than 10 years old system made in Classic ASP for a travel company, where everything was so messup that original developer & company also take off hands to make any changes and I did that.
