Message written will be saved with the order in database along with a auto generated unique code. Please let me know if the receiver of the gift will get the unique code via email, or your company will manually give them the unique code at the time of delivering the gift? I have also created widgets and as per your requirements this widget is a simple one so will be a simple task. I have worked on child themes too and know how to create it.
