Abstract Estimation of risks in finance is very important in that it is used to evaluate whether an investments is a good one or not. Riskier investments usually have higher expected returns when compared to safer investments. One way of measuring risks is through the Equity risk premium which is one of the major components of any risk and return model in finance. It is estimated through the use of historical returns which are differentiated from the yearly returns on bonds and stocks over a long period of time which consists of the expected risk premium (Booth,1999). Nevertheless, despite the fact that the equity risk premium is vital in finance it is still shocking how the practice of this method is still being used haphazardly. Therefore, this paper will seek to critically evaluate the Equity Risk Premium of a chosen sector of the Australian stock market.
