Kanji Highlighting (via HTML tags)

I am looking for a developer who can help me with a project that involves kanji highlighting using HTML tags. I am looking for a javascript program that reads in a list of kanji charaters and words and formats some html of use with the Anki study tool. The project requires the following skills and experience: - HTML coding and proficiency in using HTML tags - JavaScript Code Development Requirements: - Highlighting 1 kanji character using HTML tags - Classification of the kanji reading into 1 of 3 categories (On-Yomi, Kun-Yomi, Special) - The purpose of the kanji highlighting is for educational purposes Background: When learning Japanese Kanji characters and words, many books take the approach of showing the character, giving the character's basic meaning, giving the character's different readings (On-Yomi, Kun-Yomi, Special) and finally giving several words using the character. People using these books usually study the words over and over again until they remember the words themselves along with the target Kanji character. There are many approaches to studying these words. Flash cards are a timeless approach. In the modern era, programs like Anki are a kind of computer based flash card system that applies Spaced Repetition as a scientific approach to efficient study. Users create Notes (Anki's representation of flash cards) and then study these Notes in ever increasing, spaced intervals. Anki supports HTML tagging to allows the user to define media-rich content, including highlights, pictures and even links. Project goal: Writing HTML code for hundreds of Kanji characters and thousands of words is time consuming. I spend more time creating Anki content than I do studying said content. I am looking for script that will read in the target Kanji, the list of Kanji words and format (html tag) them in a way that is consistent with my Note definition. Project Requirements: - a single entry consist of a single kanji character and one or more words that use that character - the script should add an html tag with a class that highlights the specific Kanji in the overall word - the script should add a class name relative to the reading classification in the word (On-Yomi, Kun-Yomi, Special) - the script should use offline libraries/dictionaries to determine the reading classification, no online APIs (google translate, chatGPT, AI, etch...) - this is a command line node.js script for the moment. The HTML tags are not consumed by a typical browser and consumed by viewers. The output of the script should be a CVS or excel spreadsheet containing the html strings as raw text. - the script should be able to process one or more kanji characters and word lists - any public libraries consumed should not be modified directly (no edits in the node_modules folders). developers should extend the functionality of existing libraries through code in the main root directly or the project. About Japanese Kanji: Japanese writing consist of 3 character systems; Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Hiragana and Katakana each consist of 48 base characters that represent phonetic sounds in the Japanese language. Hiragana is typically used to represent the sounds of Japanese native words while Katakana represents words and sounds non-native to Japanese. While all Japanese words can be represented with the 96 base characters of Hiragana and Katakana, along with several variations on this base character set, many words have the same phonetic pronunciation and spelling. The Kanji character system is the predominate wring system in Japan, where Kanji characters represent the same sounds defined in Hiragana. The share and structure of the Kanji themselves defining the specific means of a given, ambiguous phonetic sound. For example the Hiragana word かう(kau), while having a single reading, can mean to buy (買う), to keep a pet (飼う) or even other meanings. Here the Kanjis 買 and 飼 represent the same phonetic sound, but by having different shapes/structure, the difference between the two is defined. While the hiragana and katakana sets, along with their variations include more than 96 unique combinations, these systems are quickly manageable when compared to the 2500+ unique Kanji character and combinations needed to fully read and comprehend a Japanese news paper. Notes: - Developers do not need to be specifically fluent in Japanese to accomplish this task. A general overview of Japanese Kanji structure can be provided if needed. - Kun-Yomi is straight forward, hiragana phonetic representations word syllables - On-Yomi, while usually represented in katakana, maps 1-to-1 with hiragana - Japanese language terms have many ambiguities, in these cases, the user should have a mechanism to specify a manual tag, this is specially true with special readings - in terms of coding, Japanese Kanji is a matter of lookup and character matching I have attached examples scans from a typical Kanji instruction book. Example 1: Provided with the base kanji "降" and the words 降車口, 以降, 降りる and 降る, the script should produce the following information/html tagged strings: word: 降車口 kanji_tag_string: <span class="on">降</span>車口 kana_tag_string: <span class="on">こう</span>しゃぐち word: 以降 kanji_tag_string: 以<span class="on">降</span> kana_tag_string: い<span class="on">こう</span> word: 降りる kanji_tag_string: <span class="kun">降</span>りる kana_tag_string: <span class="kun">おり</span>る word: 降る kanji_tag_string: <span class="kun">降</span>る kana_tag_string: <span class="kun">ふ</span>る Note the class "on" for On-Yomi and "kun" for Kun-Yomi. While Onyomi in usually represented on Katakana, in spoken instruction and literature, Japanese native words are typically written in Hiragana. Example 2: Provided the kanji 土, and the words 土曜日 and お土産, the script should produce the following information/html tagged strings: word: 土曜日 kanji_tag_string: <span class="on">土</span>曜日 kana_tag_string: <span class="on">ど</span>ようび word: お土産 kanji_tag_string: お<span class="irregular">土</span>産 kana_tag_string: <span class="irregular">おみやげ</span> Note how 土, when used in this word, has no specific syllable that it solely represents. Instead the combinations of the characters お, 土 and 産 together represent the word おみやげ. In this case, while the kanji itself is tagged in the the kanij string, in the kana string, the entire word is tagged as a special/irregular reading. Notes to Developers: I will not be providing multiple reviews for different stages of the project. I will also not be creating multiple projects to track different stages and milestones. Once the project is over and done, I will provide a single feedback. Also, please consider any Freelancer Fees in your bid itself. I will not by increasing the final price or paying through alternative means.
