I'm intending for this project to really be two projects. This is the first and a second project will be posted to the winning bidder as a follow on to this first project once it is completed.
What I'm looking for is someone with fairly expert knowledge in Java that can implement a custom software renderer using the Java 1.1 SDK. A good example of the type of quality I'm looking for exactly can be seen at [[login to view URL]][1]. Take a look at their solitaire game. I have my own existing games but they do not run as fast since the do not have their own software renderer and aren't optimized as well as the applets found on Crystal Squid's site. The developers at Crystal Squid's site discuss some of their engine but not in great detail, here is the thread:

The one thing they do mention is how it is based on an ImageProducer/ImageConsumer model and a lot of their work on the engine can be found in postings to the forums at javagaming.org.
What I would like delivered for this project is simple. I would like a basic 2D engine with a custom software renderer and also have support for transparancy. I would especially like to have shadow effects on the cards and the dialogs as shown in the Solitaire game. For this project no game will need to be created just the engine and a simple demo showing off the renderer and the transparancy/shadow effects.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me and I will repond as quickly as possible.
