Deployment script for an ASP.NET application

**Background:** We have a complex ASP.NET solution that is deployed live on a single web-server. The deployment process right now is by stopping IIS, unzipping the solution into the relevant directory and starting IIS again. The solution is running under Windows Server 2003, [login to view URL], .Net 1.1 Since this process is manual and leaves the site down during all the time it takes to stop IIS, unzip and start IIS again, we wish to automate it for efficiency and robustness. ## Deliverables **Here is what we need:** Assume that the solution resides in c:\inetpub\mysoln_1 OR c:\inetpub\mysoln_2. The solution will alternate between the two directories. Assume for now, that c:\inetpub\mysoln_1 has the solution and c:\inetpub\mysoln_2 does not exist. We need a script (presumably .vbs) that 1. Checks which of the two directories, c:\inetpub\mysoln_1 OR c:\inetpub\mysoln_2, that exists (here it is c:\inetpub\mysoln_1) 2. Unzips the solution into c:\inetpub\mysoln_2 3. Makes IIS use the c:\inetpub\mysoln_2 instead, i.e. 1. - Stops IIS 2. - Changes the IIS physical directory of the solution to the other 3. - Starts IIS again 4. Deletes c:\inetpub\mysoln_1 This should give an automated and very efficient unpacking and switch between the old and the new application. **The solution / deliverables:** *The essential part of the solution is how to programmatically control IIS to perform the necessary tasks.* The solution should consist of: 1. The vbs script The script should have relevant directories, program names, etc. defined as easily identifiable Constants, so that we can safely modify it to our deployment environment 2. Directions as to which unzipping tool is needed and where it should be installed ??" we will purchase the tool ourselves according to directions given with solution 3. The worlds simplest example web ([login to view URL] .....) and instructions for setting it up and testing the deployment script 4. Instructions saying what needs to be done on a standard W2003 Server in order to give the script the necessary permissions to control IIS 1) All deliverables will be considered "work made for hire" under U.S. Copyright law.
